Common Allergy Symptoms
Allergies can affect the nose, eyes, skin, lungs or gut. Select all that apply:
If you have difficulty breathing, throat swelling, dizziness or loss of consciousness after an exposure, this may be anaphylaxis — a medical emergency requiring immediate adrenaline and hospital care.
What Are You Reacting To?
Identifying the specific trigger is the foundation of effective allergy management. Common allergens in India include dust mites, pollen, mold, pet dander, insect stings and specific foods. Without testing, most people blame the wrong allergen.
Aeroallergens
Dust mites, pollen, mold spores, pet dander — cause rhinitis and asthma.
Food Allergens
Milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish and shellfish are common culprits.
Drugs & Contact Allergens
Penicillin, NSAIDs, latex, nickel and cosmetics can cause allergic reactions.

Allergy Care at Arihant Hospital

Allergy Testing & Diagnosis
Skin prick testing is fast, sensitive and done in a single clinic visit — small droplets of allergen extracts are placed on the forearm and the skin is lightly pricked. Results appear within 15 minutes. For cases where skin testing is not suitable (severe eczema, medications), specific IgE blood tests are used. Patch testing identifies contact allergens. The key is not just testing broadly but correlating positive results with symptoms you actually experience.

Symptom Control & Avoidance
Treatment depends on the type and severity. Antihistamines control mild nasal, eye and skin symptoms. Intranasal corticosteroids are first-line for persistent allergic rhinitis. Inhaled corticosteroids and bronchodilators are used for allergic asthma. Adrenaline auto-injectors are prescribed for patients at risk of anaphylaxis. Equally important is environmental control — dust mite covers, air purifiers, avoiding known food triggers — which reduces the frequency and severity of attacks.

Allergen Immunotherapy for Long-Term Relief
For patients with severe or persistent allergy not controlled by medications, immunotherapy can be life-changing. It involves giving gradually increasing doses of the offending allergen — as subcutaneous injections or sublingual drops — over 3 to 5 years. Over time, the immune system develops tolerance, reducing symptoms and the need for daily medication. Immunotherapy can also prevent allergic rhinitis from progressing to asthma in some patients.
Identify. Control. Live Comfortably Again.
Allergy care starts with accurate identification of triggers, followed by a plan combining avoidance, medication and where indicated, immunotherapy. The goal is fewer symptoms and fewer medicines over time.

callSpeak with our care teamAllergies are an overreaction of the immune system to normally harmless substances like pollen, dust mites, certain foods, insect stings or medications. The immune system mistakenly identifies them as threats and releases histamine and other chemicals.
Symptoms depend on the trigger and route of exposure. Common symptoms include sneezing, runny or blocked nose, itchy and watery eyes, skin rash, hives, wheezing, cough and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis.
Diagnosis is by a detailed history combined with skin prick testing and specific IgE blood tests. Patch testing is used for contact allergies.
Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction that affects multiple systems within minutes. It causes difficulty breathing, throat swelling, low blood pressure and loss of consciousness. It is a medical emergency requiring immediate adrenaline.
Allergies cannot be cured but can be effectively managed with avoidance, medications and, in selected cases, allergen immunotherapy, which can modify the immune response and reduce symptoms long-term.
Immunotherapy involves gradually exposing the patient to increasing doses of the allergen (by injection or sublingual drops) to build tolerance. It can reduce symptoms and the need for medications over 3–5 years.
See a specialist if symptoms are persistent, interfere with sleep or daily life, are not controlled by basic antihistamines, or if you have had any episode of severe reaction.
Coverage depends on your policy. Allergy testing and treatment including hospitalisation for severe reactions is usually covered. Contact the hospital desk to confirm details.
